Ibra hope Milan against Arsenal

China welcomes Anelka

PSG coach Carlo Ancelotti: Champions League clash between Arsenal and AC Milan is '50-50'

The Paris Saint-Germain boss believes both sides are capable of qualifying for next year’s tournament but are currently well adrift of the quality of Barcelona and Real Madrid

Carlo Ancelotti feels the upcoming Champions League clash between Arsenal and AC Milan is "50-50", but claims neither side is enjoying a strong spell domestically.

Arsene Wenger’s men travel to San Siro on Wednesday night for the first leg of their second-round tie with the Italian giants, with both sides currently struggling for consistency this season.

Former Chelsea boss Ancelotti feels the match is evenly poised, but believes neither team has the belief they can win this year’s tournament due to the form of La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid.

He told reporters: “For Arsenal and Milan, I’m not sure they’re thinking they can win the Champions League because of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

“Milan are not in a good moment. They’re not doing well in the championship, they have lost matches at home and have a lot of injuries. Arsenal look a little bit better at the moment, but have their own injuries and have not been very consistent, either. I think it’s 50-50.”

The 52-year-old also feels that, with their chances of lifting the trophy come May, both sides’ qualification via their national league for next season’s competition must be their priority.

He added: “They know that if they want to play in the Champions League next year they have two possibilities: win the Champions League or [qualify via] their domestic division. 

"For Milan and Arsenal, it’s easier to think about [qualifying that way], not winning the Champions League.”
